Aim of Homework
- Consolidate work done in school
- Keep parents/carers informed of work covered in school
- Ensure children make best progress possible
- Develop good study skills
- Prepare children for expectations at secondary school
We ask parents and carers to support their children with the homework, e.g.:
- Reading with them / to them
- Testing spellings / times tables
- Asking questions about content
- Assisting where necessary
- Encouraging children to try their best
If you are not sure what to do, please ask a member of staff. You will find them happy to advise you.
Look out for our “IMPACT” workshops that will show you how to help with your child’s learning at home.
When children return their work to school, it will be acknowledged by a teacher or teaching assistant. However, we do not have time to mark homework in depth. We are, of course, happy to read and note any comments that you wish to make.
Children should bring book bags to school every day to keep reading books, journals, diaries and homework activities clean, tidy and protected.
The amount and type of homework will vary according to your child’s age and ability. Typical homework is shown below:
Reception:
- Take books home (to read with or to an adult)
- Open ended task related to work in school
Years 1 and 2
- Spellings (given on Monday)
- Reading with an adult (or older brother or sister) every day; adult to make comment/sign diary twice a week.
- One task related to work in school.
Years 3 and 4
- Spellings (given on Monday)
- Reading and reading journal – one reading activity each week, reading each evening
- 1 Literacy (or topic) task
- 1 Maths task
Years 5 and 6
- Spellings (given on Monday)
- Reading journals and activities – two reading activities each week, reading each evening.
- 1 Maths task
- 1 Literacy task
