Autumn Term
In the Autumn term our PSHCE work is all about new beginnings which also linked to the school move. We study the topic ‘Ourselves’ in Science and learn how we change as we grow older. This ties in well with our RE work which focuses upon ‘Belonging’. We think about what it means to belong in the context of school, family and the wider community. Children learn to sing a variety of songs in Music and how to keep a steady beat. In Geography we look at different kinds of houses and in History children learn about what homes were like in the past. We go on a walk around the local area to identify different kinds of houses. In DT we make a room of a house in a box which uses a variety of joining skills. We use a word bank in ICT and look at information around us. In PE we concentrate on using the space around us effectively and the importance of warming up and cooling down.
Spring Term
In the Spring term we learn about sound and hearing and light and dark. Our Geography work is linked to the local area and we go on a local walk and think about where we live and our journey to school. We plan, design, make and evaluate a fruit salad which enables us to learn about different fruit and think about healthy diets. Our Art links with our Science work in the Summer term which is about light and dark. We look carefully at the colours in the sky at different times in the day and mix colours to produce some excellent paintings. In RE we discuss the Easter story and in PSHCE we think about how we learn best and how to overcome problems. ICT work concentrates upon understanding instructions and making things happen. Our PE work focuses on dance and gymnastics.
Summer Term
In Science we learn about pushes and pulls. We also learn how to help plants grow well and plant our own runner beans. We draw, paint and make sculptures of fantasy gardens to tie in with Science and Literacy work. In ICT we focus upon labelling and classifying and in Music we compose pieces around the song ‘Rain, rain go away’. PSHCE looks at relationships and we learn about respecting each other and taking turns. We also work on developing our gymnastic skills using both floor work and the apparatus. In DT we make moving pictures which help the children develop an understanding of simple mechanisms. Geography work concentrates upon locating the continents of the world and learning about different countries. We make art work and look at stories from around the world. We also go on an informative visit to The Horniman Museum to enhance our Geography skills and knowledge. In PE we learn how to play team games and the skills required for them.
