Autumn Term
Our Geography topic this term is ‘Rivers’ during which we identify key features of rivers from around the world. Our History topic focuses on major changes in Great Britain since 1948 and group work explores specific areas through the different decades. Linked to these Geography and History topics, we produce multimedia presentations in ICT using Powerpoint and Hyperstudio. Our main Science topics are ‘changing circuits’, ‘micro-organisms’ and ‘reversible and irreversible changes’ which involve a range of practical investigations. In R.E, we explore Sikhism and in particular look at the significance of the Gurdwara in the Sikh community. In P.E. we develop basketball skills and explore movements and sequences in dance and gymnastics. In our Design and Technology work, we complete a highly enjoyable moving vehicles project. Our music this term (and for the rest of the year) takes the form of steel pan lessons with a specialist steel pan teacher.
Spring Term
This term proves to be an intense term of studying the core subjects in depth. Many children are involved in booster classes to rapidly improve their English and Maths skills. The remaining Year 6 Science topics are taught which include: Interdependence and Adaptation, Forces, How We See Things and more about dissolving. Mind mapping and Revise Wise are used to help children remember previous topics in Science. Our ICT work this term is centred on developing spreadsheet skills, during which we complete many challenges. In PE, we develop tag rugby skills and continue our gymnastics work.
Summer Term
By the Summer term, Year 6 children have completed their SATs tests and participate in activities to support their transition to secondary school. We focus on more creative subjects to ensure children have had a well balanced year. In P.E. we practise our athletic skills and take part in several football and rugby matches with other schools. Our History and Music topics focus on a study of John Lennon’s life and music. Art, drama, singing and dancing skills are all practised during the rehearsals for our end of year production, which is always a hugely enjoyable event!
