Reception Autumn Term

Our topic is, ‘Transport and Journeys’.  We read stories about journeys, including ‘Mr Gumpy’s Outing’ and information books about different types of transport.  We discuss the journeys we make and children draw maps of their journeys to school.  They make models of Mr Gumpy’s motor car.  We visit the London Transport Museum, to see different modes of transport from the past and some from the future.

Communication and Language

Listening & Attention, Understanding & Speaking


  • To concentrate during an appropriate activity.
  • To listen to stories and discussions about transport, and journeys they might have taken and respond appropriately.
  • To understand ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions related to transport and journeys, and make predictions and conclusions.
  • To use language to imagine and recreate experiences e.g. acting out stories related to journeys e.g. We’re going on a bear hunt.


Physical Development

Moving & Handling, Health & Self-Care


  • To learn to move around in different ways.
  • To adjust speed and direction when playing racing and chasing games.
  • To use the climbing equipment safely
  • To use a range of tools such as scissors, pens, and brushes effectively, including pencils for writing.
  • To understand that good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene can contribute to good health.


Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Making relationships, self-confidence and self-awareness, managing feelings and behaviour.


  • To initiate conversations and listen to other children.
  • To confidently speak to others and try new activities.

  • To enjoy favourite stories, rhymes, songs & poems related to transport and journeys e.g. Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car.
  • To look at information books and make our own.
  • To be able to talk about stories
  • To write own name and other things such as labels and captions for their Transport information books.


Numbers, Shape, Space & Measure

  • To recognise numerals to 10.
  • To count objects to 10 and beyond.
  • To use language such as ‘more’ and ‘fewer to compare two sets of objects.’
  • To use everyday language related to time.
  • To begin to use mathematical names for ‘solid’3D shapes and ‘flat’ 2D shapes.

Understanding of the World

People & Communities, The World, Technology

  • To enjoy joining in with family customs and routines e.g journeys they have made or places they have visited.
  • To visit the Transport Museum.
  • To know that information can be retrieved from computers.

Expressive Arts & Design

Exploring & using media & materials. Being imaginative

  • To learn a group of songs and dances related to Transport and Journeys.
  • To explore what happens when they mix colours.
  • To build and construct with a purpose in mind e.g. to make models of Mr Gumpy’s car.
