Year 1 Spring Term

Children become more able to write in full sentences. We read, and are inspired by, stories from around the world, linked to our topic learning about weather. We discuss, perform, contrast and retell the stories: ‘Lila and the Secret of the Rain’ andThe Leopard’s Drum’. Also, we read and write poems about the weather. In the 2nd half of the term we explore stories with fantasy settings such as; ‘Night Monkey, Day Monkey’ and ‘The Baboon on the Moon’.

The children continue to develop confidence with whole numbers, counting and place value through daily maths lessons. We practise our doubles and learn to count back and forth in 2s, 5s and 10s. Children develop fluency with number-bonds to 10 and 20 and investigate odd and even numbers.

We plant, grow and care for flowers and vegetables. Children compare and describe different plants and label the parts of a plant.

Children learn about the main teachings of Chrisitanity and what it means to be a Christian. Also we look at the Easter story.

We discuss perseverance, potential and issues surrounding this in ‘Going for Gold’. We also explore ‘Good to be me’ where we promote self- esteem.

Children are introduced to internet safety and we start to explore algorithms and code through the use of Bee Bots.

In outdoor PE lessons we focus on develeping our football skills. We explore dance and movement during indoor PE lessons where we look at levels, direction and speed. We perform dances individually, with partners and as a group.

The Sun has got his Hat on.

In History we research Neil Armstrong and recognise his individual achievements. We also explore the solar system and significant changes through the use of Google Earth.

Children investigate and record the changes in weather and the seasons. We explore the weather of the British Isles; consider our local environment and how we interact with it. This links to our English learning through the story ‘Lila and the Secret of the Rain’ where we discover the difference in global weather systems.

We design, make and evaluate instruments to measure weather – Sun dials and rain sticks. During Easter, we create Easter nests and baskets.

In Art we draw, paint and make paper flower sculptures.

We learn and sing songs about flowers and other things which grow. We use these to explore pulse and rhythm.
